I Would Rather Be With You

I would rather be strolling across the promenade hand in hand with you. I would rather be eating ice-cream on a summer’s day with you. I would rather be wearing shorts and a T-shirt and feeling as if I was nine again. I would rather be sitting next to you on the bus on the way back home.

Living a life shoulder to shoulder with toffs is not what I wanted. Men who think they can buy affection are dreadful company. Wearing stilettos and pencil skirts is so confining. Hotels and private hire limousines, champagne and hors d’oeuvres, boastful and boorish men.

How could you ever doubt it? I would much rather be with you.

Midnight At The Oasis, Sing Your Camel To Bed

Jim Adams, aka Newepicauthor, the creator of A Unique Title For Me, is hosting SONG-LYRIC-SUNDAY and this week he has chosen the theme DAWN/NOON/DUSK/MIDNIGHT/NOCTURNAL/DIURNAL.

Well, I spent so long trying to find a song with the word “diurnal” in the lyrics, I became very distracted this week. So I have had to go right back to the first song that popped into my head when I saw Jim’s theme for this week.

The word midnight made me think of “Midnight At The Oasis”, a song that was very popular in the seventies and was also a big hit in 1994, when it was recorded by the band “The Brand New Heavies”. What ever happened to them? Like so many in the music industry, they have faded from memory. But it was a great reminder to listen to their track a few times.

Now when they released it, I just liked the music and all the rollerscates in their video. I never ever paid attention to the lyrics. Now I can see there is a lot of innuendo in them there lyrics that I had not even noticed before. SONG-LYRIC-SUNDAY can be so educational at times.

It turns out this song is rather saucy and about a torrid love affair that takes place in the desert! Well, I had no idea! But I had not even entered pubity when The Brand New Heavies released this, so no wonder the meaning of the lyrics escaped my notice.

Midnight at the oasis, sing your camel to bed
Shadows paintin’ our faces, traces of romance in our heads
Heaven’s holdin’ a half-moon shinin’ just for us
Let’s slip off to a sand dune real soon, kick up a little dust

Come on, Cactus is our friend, he’ll walk down the way
Come on, till the evenin’ ends, till the evenin’ ends
You don’t have to answer, there’s no need to speak
I’ll be your belly dancer, prancer and you could be my sheik

But you won’t need no harem, honey when I’m by your side
And you won’t need no camel, no no when I take you for a ride

Come on, Cactus is our friend, he’ll walk down the way
Come on, till the evenin’ ends, till the evenin’ ends

Midnight at the oasis, sing your camel to bed
Shadows paintin’ our faces, traces of romance in our heads
Heaven’s holdin’ a half-moon shinin’ just for us
Let’s slip off to a sand dune real soon, kick up a little dust

Oh midnight, midnight at the oasis, midnight at the oasis
Midnight at the oasis, midnight at the oasis
Midnight at the oasis, midnight at the oasis
