The Unmistakable Tom Takes Me By Surprise

This is Part Two of a Terrific Tom Triple today! Jim Adams, aka Newepicauthor, the creator of A Unique Title For Me, is hosting SONG-LYRIC-SUNDAY and this week he has chosen the theme: WRITTEN OR SUNG BY TOM/DICK/HARRY.

diystoreWhen I was around seventeen, I remember I had to go and pick up some supplies for a construction project I was working on as a volunteer. I went to a large DIY store in Wigan. It may have been B&Q, although I think there was another store (now closed down) and I can’t be certain which store I went to. What I do remember very clearly is hearing a song over the sound system. I had never heard it before, but the singer’s voice was unmistakable!

Help Yourself - Tom Jones.jpgIt was the magnificent TOM JONES! I remember loving the song as soon as I heard it. It still makes me smile when I hear it today. But I vividly remember what happened that first time I ever heard this song.

The store was  pretty empty, so wrapped up in the moment, I began to sing and dance. Unabashed I was boogying in the tiling aisle. Out of the blue, one of the staff at the store appeared in front of me and started to dance with me!!! It was one of those great little moments that make me love life and love people!

This brilliant track is “Helf Yourself”, made famous by our beloved Tom Jones!

Love is like candy on a shelf
You want to taste and help yourself
The sweetest things are there for you
Help yourself, take a few
That’s what I want you to do.

We’re always told repeatedly
The very best in life is free
And if you want to prove it’s true
Baby I’m telling you
This is what you should do
Just help yourself to my lips
To my arms just say the word, and they are yours
Just help yourself to the love,
In my heart your smile has opened up the door
The greatest wealth that exists in the world,
Could never buy what I can give
Just help yourself to my lips
To my arms, and then lets really start to live

Allllllllll right. Yeah

My heart has love enough for two
More than enough for me and you
I’m rich with love, a millionaire
I’ve so much, it’s unfair
Why don’t you take a share
Just help yourself to my lips
To my arms just say the word, and they are yours
Just help yourself to the love,
In my heart your smile has opened up the door
The greatest wealth that exists in the world
Could never buy what I can give
So help yourself to my lips, to my arms
And then lets really start to live
Just help yourself to my lips
To my arms just say the word, and they are yours
Just help yourself to the love

In my heart your smile

It Seems I Have A Soft Spot For The Welsh

tj.jpgJim Adams, aka Newepicauthor, the creator of A Unique Title For Me, is hosting SONG-LYRIC-SUNDAY and this week he has chosen the theme: WRITTEN OR SUNG BY TOM/DICK/HARRY.

There is only one man that came into my head when I saw this theme. The pride of Wales (I acknowledge that my Welsh family might take issue over that statement), the enigmatic, energetic, epic TOM JONES!!!

I loved the songs I heard him sing as a little girl. There is one particular song he is famous for which is my number one choice for karaoke. I have performed it so many times I have lost count. Love it! So, I have picked “It’s Not Unusual” as my top Tom track.

fab.jpgThere is a certain sound to some of the tracks that Tom Jones is famous for. It makes me feel like jumping on the stage and performing. I can’t explain that wonderful karaoke crooner quality his most famous songs have, but as a celebrated karaoke queen – I am only grateful for the contribution he has made to karaoke!!!

But I am going to confess right now…I have more up my sleeve. Today Caramel is hosting a TOM-ATHON! The Welsh hottie from the valleys who sang with so much heart and wiggled his hips at the same time. Besides this favourite of mine, I have two other tracks up my sleeve. Prepare yourself!

It’s not unusual to be loved by anyone
It’s not unusual to have fun with anyone
But when I see you hanging about with anyone
It’s not unusual to see me cry,
I wanna die

It’s not unusual to go out at any time
But when I see you out and about it’s such a crime
If you should ever wanna be loved by anyone,
It’s not unusual it happens every day
No matter what you say
You’ll find it happens all the time
Love will never do what you want it to
Why can’t this crazy love be mine?

It’s not unusual to be mad with anyone
It’s not unusual to be sad with anyone
But if I ever find
That you’ve changed at anytime
It’s not unusual to find that I’m in love with you

We Are Told That This Is The End

Jack had to help me out with my complete mental fog when it came to this week’s theme for SONG-LYRIC-SUNDAY. His suggestion actually surprised me. It is my kind of music. Not so much Jack’s, although he does like this song. He said it was quite an anthem. He is right, it was very much a Britpop anthem.

Jim Adams, aka Newepicauthor, the creator of A Unique Title For Me, is hosting SONG-LYRIC-SUNDAY and this week he has chosen the theme: BOTTOM/END/MIDDLE/SIDE/TOP

Jack is more into pop music than me. I prefer music with guitars, more rocky than anything. We both like to dance though. We also both love classical music and the iconic tracks from the sixties, seventies and eighties, which will never really go out of fashion. Anyway, I bought some naughty pastries for Jack and me from the French bakery round the corner and we are munching them before we set off. But I wanted to post this song before we head out for the day. 🙂

msp.pngSo…the song that Jack suggested is a cracker! I hope you like this song. It was a huge hit here in England, I don’t know about other countries. But if you haven’t heard it yet, well, it is about time you did!

This Welsh band had some big hits, but none as big as this one. It was and still is one of the major anthems of the entire Britpop era. They carved their names in the Britpop Hall of Fame with this track. In fact this song is a likely contender for the biggest hit of that incredible phase of British music.

Standing ovation for The Manic Street Preachers “Design For Life”!!! It’s the music that does it!

Libraries gave us power
Then work came and made us free
What price now for a shallow piece of dignity

I wish I had a bottle
Right here in my dirty face to wear the scars
To show from where I came

We don’t talk about love we only want to get drunk
And we are not allowed to spend
As we are told that this is the end

A design for life
A design for life
A design for life
A design for life

I wish I had a bottle
Right here in my pretty face to wear the scars
To show from where I came

We don’t talk about love we only want to get drunk
And we are not allowed to spend
As we are told that this is the end

A design for life
A design for life
A design for life
A design for life

We don’t talk about love we only want to get drunk
And we are not allowed to spend
As we are told that this is the end

A design for life
A design for life
A design for life
A design for…

End Of A Century…It’s Nothing Special

Jim Adams, aka Newepicauthor, the creator of A Unique Title For Me, is hosting SONG-LYRIC-SUNDAY and this week he has chosen the theme: BOTTOM/END/MIDDLE/SIDE/TOP

I don’t know why, but I had a complete mind blank on this theme. I need Jack to give me some help because I could only think of one song. So I am looking forward to seeing what everyone else thinks of, because my head is foggy this week.

Music - Blur - PhotoshootI have chosen a song by Blur, called “End Of A Century”. I had this song in my head at the turn of the year. I was in the local supermarket at around five o’clock in the afternoon. I could hear a young woman loudly shouting obscenities. There was a security guard advising the group of women to behave or else they would be asked to leave. As I walked past them, I realized that these pretty young women, dressed up in glitzy clothing all wreaked of alcohol and they were behaving abonibly. I expect that kind of scene outside some nasty nightclub in Putney at two o’clock in the morning at the weekend, but not in the middle of a supermarket when families and people of all ages are trying to buy their groceries. They were a complete disgrace.

Anyway, I left realizing that sadly that is exactly how many young people will have approached the end of the year and the start of the new year. It’s kind of pathetic isn’t it. Oh well, silly women. It would seem that to them a special night out is to trash their own bodies.

dr.pngI think the lyrics to this song do touch on a certain “culture” among young adults. It’s not a healthy culture. But it is there. Some people just want to fit in with that culture. I found as a teenager when I was working for the record company and going to clubs and pubs, I was disgusted by the behavior I saw. I couldn’t wait to break free and be able to breath in clean air.

I am sure that is not the thinking that prompted the lyrics in this song. But to me it captures some of the irony of that culture that many young people seem to be in such a hurry to adopt.

tv2.pngI read that the song was actually referring to the way couples end up staying in instead of going out. Rather than romantic gazing across candlelight, they stare in the light from the television. There is also a reference to people reflecting and having hopes for the future but neglecting to take care of the present.

Anyway…I will stop there…this is my song for today. I am not going to be around today – Jack has plans for me. It’s all good. We are spending time with friends. That is important. Establishing ourselves as a couple – “it’s not up for discussion” is Jack’s line. He is adamant our friends need to respect and accept it. I get the impression he has had more feedback that I have. I am trying not to be anxious. I love Jack and I will follow his lead with this.

She said there’s ants in the carpet
Dirty little monsters
Eating all the morsels
Picking up the rubbish
Give her effervescence
She needs a little sparkle
Good morning tv
You’re looking so healthy

And we all say
Don’t want to be alone
We wear the same clothes
Because we feel the same
And kiss with dry lips
When we say goodnight
End of the century… it’s nothing special

Sex on tv
Everybody’s at it
And the mind gets dirty
As you get closer to thirty
He gives her a cuddle
They’re glowing in a huddle
Good night tv
You’re all made up
And you know that

And we all say
Don’t want to be alone
We wear the same clothes
Because we feel the same
And kiss with dry lips
When we say goodnight
End of the century… it’s nothing special

Can you eat her yes you can

And we all say
Don’t want to be alone
We wear the same clothes
Because we feel the same
And kiss with dry lips
When we say goodnight
End of the century… it’s nothing special

And I Go: La La La La La

Jim Adams, aka Newepicauthor, the creator of A Unique Title For Me, is hosting SONG-LYRIC-SUNDAY and this week he has chosen the theme: LA

lookieOooh it was close between Kylie and Roxette. But as the Kylie song I thought of gives me a slight headache whenever I hear it, I chose Roxette.

I think I have mentioned in other posts that although I was never excited about Roxette themselves, there are a handful of their tracks that I loved and I still love. It’s weird because I don’t know anything about Roxette, but I counted five of their tracks on my YouTube top 100 playlist.

Which must mean that someone in Roxette knew what they were doing. Tracks that survived their decade and end up acquiring a certain iconicity in their own right. This is one of their memorable tracks. Right slap bang in the middle is the “la la la la la” that makes it my choice for today’s SONG-LYRIC-SUNDAY.

1-2-3-4
Walking like a man,
hitting like a hammer,
she’s a juvenile scam.
Never was a quitter,
tasty like a raindrop,
she’s got the look.
Heavenly bound
cause heaven’s got a number
when she’s spinning me around,
Kissing is a colour,
her loving is a wild dog,
she’s got the look.

She’s got the look.
She’s got the look.
What in the world can make a brown-eyed girl turn blue.
When everything I’ll ever do I’ll do for you
and I go: la la la la la
she’s got the look.

Fire in the ice,
naked to the T-bone
is a lover’s disguise.
Banging on the head drum,
shaking like a mad bull,
she’s got the look.
Swaying to the band,
moving like a hammer,
she’s a miracle man.
Loving is the ocean,
Kissing is the wet sand,
she’s got the look.

And she goes:
na na na na na na na na.

…A Note To Follow…

such fun!.jpgThe first time I heard the term “la” I was entranced. It was within a song that completely captivated me at the tender age of five, and has continued to enchant me ever since. On New Year’s Day, my gorgeous Jack humoured me by hosting me and some friends of ours for the BBC showing of “The Sound Of Music”. How I love him!

Jim Adams, aka Newepicauthor, the creator of A Unique Title For Me, is hosting SONG-LYRIC-SUNDAY and this week he has chosen the theme: LA. I could not really go without mentioning how I first discovered the “la” – could I?

gorgeous.jpgIs it embarrassing that at a moment’s notice I could sing the entire score of “The Sound Of Music”? As can most of my family and a core group of my friends I grew up with!

This particular track has wonderful scenes where they mix up the “Do-Re-Mi” theme and in delightful harmony an eruption of joyful singing cascades around the streets of Saltsburg. I know every word off by heart.

delightEven now, the thought of that gorgeous film makes happiness ripple through me! They just do not make films like they used to. But I don’t mind that. It is an utter pleasure to sit down and anticipate the opening bars from one of the most gorgeous films ever produced. (Although, I will admit, we do not stay on the sofa for long, we jump to our feet and sing and dance whenever impelled.)

Hollywood, although I despise you in so many ways, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for “The Sound Of Music”.

DO – a deer, a female deer
RE – a drop of golden sun
MI – a name, I call myself
FA – a long long way to run
SO – a needle pulling thread
LA – a note to follow SO
TI – a drink with jam and bread
That will bring us back to DO

Doe! – a deer, a female deer
Ray! – a drop of golden sun
Me! – a name I call myself
Far! – a long long way to run
Sew! – a needle pulling thread
La! – a note to follow SO
Tea – a drink with jam and bread
That would bring us back to DO!

Do, a deer, a female dear
RE, a drop of golden sun
MI, a name, I call myself
FA, a long long way to run
SO, a needle pulling thread
LA, a note to follow SO
TI, a drink with jam and bread
That would bring us back to DO…

Looking So Crazy Right Now

hw.pngWell…today has a been a relaxing and enjoyable day of catching up on everything. Mainly housework and laundry. I have been trying to catch up with blogging too. I have had a crazy week and today has been calm and quiet – which is exactly what I needed.

While I was away, I did not have my laptop, so I couldn’t do much on WordPress. The tablet I use is cantankerous. I can view and like posts, but attempting anything else is futile, because the tablet blows a fuse when I try to do anything more demanding. So I have been trying to go back and reply to all the lovely comments from the past few crazy busy weeks.

I am going to relax here in my crib for the rest of the evening. I have a tub of home made saag aloo (my favourite) that my friend Nisha made and saved a portion for me. I also have a recipe for a vegan curry, made with chickpea, sweet potato and spinach as well as a generous amount of peanut butter! I want to make and freeze it into individual portions.

That is how I intend to use the rest of the evening, along with a glass of red wine. Early night for me I think. I am still exhausted by all the little ones I was entertaining last week, and the thought of the busy week ahead is overwhelming too! This is my chance to rest and relax and let myself recover from the crazy pace of this month.

crackers1As I am sure you have noticed, Jim Adams, aka Newepicauthor, the creator of A Unique Title For Me, is hosting SONG-LYRIC-SUNDAY and this week he has chosen the theme: CRAZY. I have enjoyed this theme as much as any other of Jim’s themes and it is great to be able to fully enjoy SONG-LYRIC-SUNDAY again.

I was thinking of another song. I like this song because I know only too well what it is to be crazy in love. I know how much Jack loves this song too. He is still up in the north. He drives back tomorrow morning. But I am sure he will approve of both of the songs I have chosen for today. I have to work on Monday and Tuesday, but I will be heading straight over to see Jack on Tuesday evening and spending Wednesday with him. That’s right – I am going to be at his home (formerly our home) for the first time in over four years.

kisWe danced to this song with all the kids (there are a lot of kids in my family) up in Snowdonia. I was teaching them to do Beyonce dance moves. They loved it. But we were listening to the music over the speakers, we didn’t watch the videos. I would be horrified at the little ones in my family seeing a lot of modern music videos. I want to protect their beautiful minds and keep them as gorgeous and delightful as they are now.

Anyway, I have added a slow version of this song and the faster original version below.

Here is the mighty original for those who don’t get annoyed by people prancing around in their underwear. I find it strange to see women gyrating around in their smalls. But apparently it sells. So, if they want to do that to earn money – hmm.

Yes! It’s so crazy right now!
Most incredibly, it’s your girl, B,
It’s your boy, young.

You ready?
Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, oh no no
Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, oh no no
Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, oh no no
Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, oh no no

Yeah, history in the making,
Part 2, it’s so crazy right now

I look and stare so deep in your eyes,
I touch on you more and more every time,
When you leave I’m begging you not to go,
Call your name two three times in a row,

Such a funny thing for me to try to explain,
How I’m feeling and my pride is the one to blame.
‘Cause I know I don’t understand,
Just how your love can do what no one else can.

Got me looking so crazy right now,
Your love’s got me looking so crazy right now
Your love got me looking so crazy right now,
Your touch got me looking so crazy right now

Your touch got me hoping you’ll page me right now,
Your kiss got me hoping you’ll save me right now
Looking so crazy
Your love’s got me looking, got me looking so crazy
Your love.

Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, oh no no
Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, oh no no
Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, oh no no
Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, oh no no

When I talk to my friends so quietly,
Who he think he is? Look at what you did to me,
Tennis shoes, don’t even need to buy a new dress,
If you ain’t there ain’t nobody else to impress,

It’s the way that you know what I thought I knew,
It’s the beat my heart skips when I’m with you,
But I still don’t understand,
Just how the love you’re doing no one else can

Got me looking so crazy right now,
Your love’s got me looking so crazy right now (oh crazy)
Got me looking so crazy right now,
Your touch (you’re in love) got me looking so crazy right now (love!)
Got me hoping you’ll page me right now,
Your kiss got me hoping you’ll save me right now
Looking so crazy
Your love’s got me looking, got me looking so crazy
Your love.

I’m looking so crazy
Your love’s got me looking, got me looking so crazy your love.

I’m on that now, let’s go
Young Hov y’all know when the flow is loco,
Young B and the R-O-C
O.G. Big Homie, the one and only,
Stick bony,
But the pocket is fat like Tony,
Soprano the ROC handle like Van Exel,
I shake phonies man, you can’t get next to,
The genuine article I do not sing though,
I sling though, if anything I bling yo,

Star like Ringo, war like a Green Beret
Crazy bring your whole set,
Jay-Z in the range,
Crazy and deranged,
They can’t figure them out they like hey is he insane

Yes sir I’m cut from a different cloth,
My texture is the best fur: chinchilla.
(Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, oh no no)
I’ve been iller than chain smokers,
How you think I got the name Hova?
(Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, oh no no)
I been realer the game’s over,
(Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, oh no no)
Fall back young, ever since I made the change over
(Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, oh no no)
To platinum the game’s been a wrap, one!

Got me looking, so crazy, my baby
I’m not myself, lately I’m foolish, I don’t do this,
I’ve been playing myself, baby I don’t care
‘Cause your love’s got the best of me,
And baby you’re making a fool of me,
You got me sprung and I don’t care who sees,
‘Cause baby you got me, you got me so crazy baby

Got me looking so crazy right now,
Your love’s (oh love) got me looking so crazy right now (lookin’ crazy)
Got me looking so crazy right now,
Your touch got me looking so crazy right now
Got me hoping you’ll page me right now,
Your kiss (baby) got me hoping you’ll save me right now (baby)
Looking so crazy
Your love’s got me looking, got me looking so crazy
Your love.

Your love.
