I inherited a Yucca recently. I may be mistaken, but I think that around that time I started out with a chronic case of sniffles, itchy streaming eyes…and recurrent styes.

Very possible. Yucca, ivy, several varieties of ferns and other potted green plants are known to be troublesome to folks who are more allergy prone.
