If It Makes You Feel Alright

Jim Adams aka Newepicauthor, the creator of A Unique Title For Me, is hosting SONG-LYRIC-SUNDAY and this week he has chosen the theme: MERSERY BEAT

As a Liverpool lass, it’s hard for me to resist featuring The Beatles – surely they take some credit for putting Merseyside onto the musical map forever.

I read a few articles about Merseybeat, and was surprised to find how much music is assigned to the genre. Some very surprising mentions cropped up, including The Righteous Brothers, Roy Orbison also Sonny and Cher. I had always thought it was just a UK thing – Merseyside bands pioneering a sound that spread to other Northern towns – Manchester, Newcastle and as far down as Birmingham. I was curious to know the connection Merseybeat has with Surrey. If anyone can enlighten me I would be grateful.

Well…top of most of the Merseybeat charts I found was a very familiar Beatles track, “Can’t Buy Me Love”. It s a great example of a very melodic style of light rock and roll. I think that is pretty much the agreed description of Merseybeat.

Can't buy me love, love
Can't buy me love

I'll buy you a diamond ring my friend
If it makes you feel alright
I'll get you anything my friend
If it makes you feel alright
'Cause I don't care too much for money
Money can't buy me love

I'll give you all I've got to give
If you say you love me too
I may not have a lot to give
But what I've got I'll give to you
I don't care too much for money
Money can't buy me love

Can't buy me love, everybody tells me so
Can't buy me love, no, no, no, no

Say you don't need no diamond rings
And I'll be satisfied
Tell me that you want the kind of things
That money just can't buy
I don't care too much for money
Money can't buy me love

Can't buy me love, everybody tells me so
Can't buy me love, no, no, no, no

Say you don't need no diamond rings
And I'll be satisfied
Tell me that you want the kind of things
That money just can't buy
I don't care too much for money
Money can't buy me love

Can't buy me love, love
Can't buy me love, oh
