Jim Adams, aka Newepicauthor, the creator of A Unique Title For Me, is hosting SONG-LYRIC-SUNDAY and this week he has chosen the theme: COUPLE/TOGETHER/US
When I saw today’s theme for SONG-LYRIC-SUNDAY, my mind started down the road to cheesy cringy music. There are some very nice songs I could have posted, but I just was not in the mood for them today. I am hoping that will change during the course of the day. Let’s see what Jack has to say when he calls me later for our Sunday morning chit chat.
I have chosen a song that is about a couple who have broken up. It’s a song I can only bear to hear about once a year because it would get on my nerves otherwise. I have a few male friends who dislike this song strongly, and use it as an example of angry female singers who sing about a guy who they have broken up with. Now in the case of this particular song, I disagree. This singer is not angry. She has moved on from any anger and hurt and she is now in a much healthier state of mind. She is simply reminding this guy that, no, she is no longer emotional and sentimental. She has had enough of being messed around and she is ready to move on with life with confidence. She can now talk and sing about the situation with good humour.
I think I have been fairly fortunate. Other than the drama five years ago with Jack (and of course we were not a couple at the time) I have not experienced anger in a break up. In fact, I don’t feel I have a lot to say on the subject. Even the most disastrous situation I experienced, resulted in me and Jack reuniting and essentially getting back together (although we were never together to begin with).
But I have had some friends who were very angry about their boyfriends. I saw very unhealthy emotions and desire to lash out, say mean things, become vengeful and cause pain and shame to their ex. I have told a few of my friends that although we might feel hurt, I didn’t think it was wise to take than pain in a destructive way.
Break-ups are hard. They can hurt a lot. I have seen some of my friends suffer severe depression after breakups. But there ought to come a stage when we put the past behind us and move on. This song, admittedly in a very teenager kind of style, exhibits that “I’m over this, I’ve moved on, I’m stronger, I’m going to get on with my life and look forward to the future, so please don’t call me and tell me you want to get back together after all the nonsense you put me through.” I don’t think it’s an angry song at all. I think it’s a “I’ve passed the angry stage, I’m at the getting on with my life stage” kind of a song. Although it is about breaking up, it is fun. the video is great fun.
I love romance. I love being part of a couple. I love love. But if it all goes wrong, I hope I get passed the anger and hurt quickly and can move on with my life. I am sure dancing around in my pyjamas singing this into my hairbrush will help.
But for now I am going to enjoy the fact that I am part of a couple. Jack and I might not be physically together, be we are very close in other ways. While he is busy over in Africa and I am busy at work here in London, the best time for us to chat is Sunday morning. The two of us are still going strong, even though I am not sure when I am going to see him next.
I remember when we broke up the first time
Saying, “This is it, I’ve had enough,” ’cause like
We hadn’t seen each other in a month
When you said you needed space. (What?)
Then you come around again and say
“Baby, I miss you and I swear I’m gonna change, trust me.”
Remember how that lasted for a day?
I say, “I hate you,” we break up, you call me, “I love you.”
Ooh, we called it off again last night
But ooh, this time I’m telling you, I’m telling you
We are never ever ever getting back together,
We are never ever ever getting back together,
You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me
But we are never ever ever ever getting back together
Like, ever…
I’m really gonna miss you picking fights
And me falling for it screaming that I’m right
And you would hide away and find your peace of mind
With some indie record that’s much cooler than mine
Ooh, you called me up again tonight
But ooh, this time I’m telling you, I’m telling you
We are never, ever, ever getting back together
We are never, ever, ever getting back together
You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me (talk to me)
But we are never ever ever ever getting back together
Ooh, yeah, ooh yeah, ooh yeah
Oh oh oh
I used to think that we were forever ever
And I used to say, “Never say never…”
Uggg… so he calls me up and he’s like, “I still love you,”
And I’m like… “I just… I mean this is exhausting, you know, like,
We are never getting back together. Like, ever”
No!
We are never ever ever getting back together
We are never ever ever getting back together
You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me
But we are never ever ever ever getting back together
We, ooh, getting back together, ohhh,
We, ooh, getting back together
You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me (talk to me)
But we are never ever ever ever getting back together

I like all the dancing in this video Mel. I made a new prompt which I think that you will like. June 14, 2020 is going to be Jack.

I love that! Jack will love it too!
As most of the songs with Jack in them are telling him to “hit the road” or making fun of him, I might have to think outside the box to keep him happy 🙂

Great choice and I don’t think it’s an angry song either. I think it is exactly as you described it. There is nothing stopping me now and I feel great type of song. If your male friends don’t like this song, I guess you can suggest they listen to Carrie Underwood “Before He Cheats” and have their car keyed. That’s an angry song!

These boys who are sensitive about women being able to make their own decisions and move on with their lives – teaches them to pull their socks up and be better at maintaining a relationship!
