I always thought I would like the idea of a six weeks of being isolated from the rest of the world, peace and quiet, none of the noise and stress of living in London. Oh to be cut off from the rest of the world.
But now, I get excited to see someone coming towards me on the pavement. It’s nice to be able to have a chat (with a two metre distance between us). It’s fun to be in huge queues at the supermarket because it means so much to be with other people.
One thing that is becoming obvious to me is that we do need people. I don’t miss being crammed onto London underground trains, everyone squashed like sardines. I don’t miss walking passed packed clubs and pubs with drinkers spilling out into the streets and being ill in the gutter. I don’t miss sitting on the M25 car park.
But every human contact is precious and appreciated at the moment. It is special to connect with other members of our human family…in any way we can.
John Donne would be proud of you.
