I am in a really funny mood at the moment. I have had tunes running through my head from the time I worked for the record company. Boy did I listen to a lot of music back then. Music I never hear on the radio anymore. Boy did I go and see a lot of bands play. Sometimes I notice that twenty years later, some of these bands might play somewhere not far away, Hammersmith or Brixton (where I noticed Shed Seven are playing soon 
I wonder if Taylor Swift will be there! They have let me in on the private joke amongst all Londoners who are scratching their heads wondering why on earth she would be having nights out in Brixton). I don’t go to see the bands I used to like twenty years ago. That was then. That’s not who I am today. Still, I don’t mind giving some of those tunes a spin occasionally.
The song I have chosen features the word “fly” or as you will hear in the song “flyyyyyyyyy”! The first time I heard this song, it was my brother who was playing it. Then I saw the video on a music show on television. It caught my attention. The band, Oasis, caught a lot of people’s attention. Very quickly they gained enormous popularity here in the UK. There is still an entire generation of men who seem to model their wardrobe, speech and attitude on the infamous Gallagher brothers. (It’s rather old for me nowadays, can’t be putting up with that nonsense.)
I have a major aversion to drug and alcohol abuse. So I am not going to big up Oasis all that much. But I do appreciate their musical talent, the phenomenal sound of the guitars in their tracks and some great lyrics. This was the first Oasis song I heard. I was a big fan back in the day. My pocket money did go on their singles, albums and tickets to their concerts.
I think this was probably the single that triggered a wave of Oasis-fandom that is still a soft spot in the hearts of many English men today.

I’m in the UK too. I liked Oasis but they were just one of many CDs I bought at that time. I enjoyed the whole Brit Pop thing and Morning Glory was a brilliant album but it was all were ten years too late for it to particularly influence me. If anything, seeing the antics of the Gallaghers put me off. With me, for music that I think of as influential, there is a very strong like between polotics – because music can do so much more than just make you tap your feet. I do agree with you. I did like their music a lot. But I didn’t like the attitude, and the references to drugs etc.
I love Eva Cassidy’s Songbird. I love The Beatles too. I am from Liverpool originally, but now in London.

Wow, I am from Liverpool originally too, Wavertree and then Hunt’s Cross. What a small world! although I’m now in Wilsthire – I left Liverpool 30+ years ago. The Manics played at Southampton a few months ago and I was sorely tempted, but the price of a ticket was more than I was willing to pay.

Yes…I can;t get over how much ticket prices have gone up. I saw loads of bands growing up for less than £10 when I had to pay for tickets. Often I was able to get free tickets through my boss.

Yes, we are very rural here, it’s very quiet but but we’re probably only 10 miles away from a city – but generally a million miles drom Liverpool! I hadn’t been there for a long time, I couldn’t wait to leave, but had enforced spells up there in 2013 after my parents died, sorting and selling their house. I knew the Manics from when I was at uni in Cardiff, before they were massive. As you say gigs then were reasonable but I think they wanted £50 this time. There’s my wife and myself, £100 is too much to watch a band play for a few hours. We’re not teenage groupies any more!

Knowing nothing about Oasis or their music, the lyrics to this one give me pause. Knowing the be-all-end-all attitude of teens–been there, done that–I’d worry for any friend who delved too deeply into this song.

You are right!
I think I learnt to enjoy the guitar music over the lyrics with a lot of the “Britpop” (which was more indie rock or some clever synth music than anything) bands. There was a definite “attitude”, one that for a while made me a little obnoxious as a teenager, but I grew tired of it quickly and rejected the attitude.
I am a big fan of the sound, the guitars…but not the spirit that some of the Britpop musicians displayed.

I did not know much about Oasis before reading your post today and the band has a real nice sound. The video was a bit strange but also enjoyable. Thanks for contributing such an informative post.

It’s been awhile since hearing this song and never paid much attention who sang it. I have heard of the Gallagher brothers. The singer is a cutie and looks like a bad boy 😉 This is a very catchy tune and great choice, Mel.

I am sure back in the day I had a crush on him. Not for long though, I started to dislike them, the more they mentioned drugs, the more I recoiled.

I never really listen to Oasis but just “Wonderwall”. I thought that song was Goosebumps, the TV series based on the books in the 90s.

I think Wonderwall is one of their top tracks – even people who didn’t like Oasis loved Wonderwall!

I’ve never heard this Oasis song before, I like the sound of it. Great pick!
I’ll admit, I’ve never been a fan of theirs, but I do really like “Wonderwall” and I think that might be their biggest hit here in the US. Other than that, I can only think of “Champagne Supernova”, which wasn’t one I liked too much because it’s all about being high on drugs.

I feel the same way. I like their sound. So talented.
But I detest the promotion of drugs. I lost enthusiasm for them because I could see as their popularity grew, they didn’t seem to take the influence they had responsibly. I couldn;t abide their attitude.
