I think most of us have at one time found our insides melting whilst listening to the mellow and melodic tones of gorgeous voice belonging to the exceptional Nat King Cole.
I only remember “discovering” him for myself when I was a teenager. My Dad had lots of compilation albums and one one of them was a song I did not recognize sung by a man’s voice. I was instantly smitten. Shortly after I watched the phenomenal classic film version of “My Fair Lady” and searched out scores of other tracks recorded by wonderful Nat King Cole.
This was the song I fell in love with…both the song and the voice singing it. One of my friends dislikes it because she says it makes her think of a stalker (she had a scary stalker), but for me it is all about being head over heels with someone and feeling excited by every thing that reminds you of them. I am sure I have felt this way when I was nearing the home of a young man I had a crush on.
I have already published a song for SONG-LYRIC-SUNDAY, but as this fit’s today’s theme of AVENUE/BOULEVARD/DRIVE/PLACE/ROAD/STREET so well, I think if nobody else has featured it, I might tag it to the line-up at the end of today.
I have often walked down this street before;
But the pavement always stayed beneath my feet before.
All at once am I
Several stories high,
Knowing I’m on the street where you live.
Are there lilac trees in the heart of town?
Can you hear a lark in any other part of town?
Does enchantment pour
Out of every door?
No, it’s just on the street where you live!
And oh! The towering feeling
Just to know somehow you are near!
The overpowering feeling
That any second you may suddenly appear!
People stop and stare. They don’t bother me.
For there’s nowhere else on earth that I would rather be.
Let the time go by,
I won’t care if I
Can be here on the street where you live.
Writers: Frederick Loewe and Alan Jay Lerner
I know that feeling very well 😉

Love Nat King Cole’s voice, and the lyrics to this are so poetic. A little scary too, as it could be a stalker 😉

I understand why anyone who has actually had a stalker might not like the words in this song…but for anyone else, it is lovely isn’t it. 🙂
