Jim Adams, aka Newepicauthor, the creator of A Unique Title For Me, is hosting SONG-LYRIC-SUNDAY and this week he has chosen the theme DAWN/NOON/DUSK/MIDNIGHT/NOCTURNAL/DIURNAL.
Well, I spent so long trying to find a song with the word “diurnal” in the lyrics, I became very distracted this week. So I have had to go right back to the first song that popped into my head when I saw Jim’s theme for this week.
The word midnight made me think of “Midnight At The Oasis”, a song that was very popular in the seventies and was also a big hit in 1994, when it was recorded by the band “The Brand New Heavies”. What ever happened to them? Like so many in the music industry, they have faded from memory. But it was a great reminder to listen to their track a few times.
Now when they released it, I just liked the music and all the rollerscates in their video. I never ever paid attention to the lyrics. Now I can see there is a lot of innuendo in them there lyrics that I had not even noticed before. SONG-LYRIC-SUNDAY can be so educational at times.
It turns out this song is rather saucy and about a torrid love affair that takes place in the desert! Well, I had no idea! But I had not even entered pubity when The Brand New Heavies released this, so no wonder the meaning of the lyrics escaped my notice.
Midnight at the oasis, sing your camel to bed
Shadows paintin’ our faces, traces of romance in our heads
Heaven’s holdin’ a half-moon shinin’ just for us
Let’s slip off to a sand dune real soon, kick up a little dust
Come on, Cactus is our friend, he’ll walk down the way
Come on, till the evenin’ ends, till the evenin’ ends
You don’t have to answer, there’s no need to speak
I’ll be your belly dancer, prancer and you could be my sheik
But you won’t need no harem, honey when I’m by your side
And you won’t need no camel, no no when I take you for a ride
Come on, Cactus is our friend, he’ll walk down the way
Come on, till the evenin’ ends, till the evenin’ ends
Midnight at the oasis, sing your camel to bed
Shadows paintin’ our faces, traces of romance in our heads
Heaven’s holdin’ a half-moon shinin’ just for us
Let’s slip off to a sand dune real soon, kick up a little dust
Oh midnight, midnight at the oasis, midnight at the oasis
Midnight at the oasis, midnight at the oasis
Midnight at the oasis, midnight at the oasis

I have always liked this song, but I only ever heard Maria Muldaur singing Midnight At The Oasis. This is nice.

I think I was just starting high school when this version was very very popular over here in England. It was played a lot on the radio. Huge hit that year.

I completely forgot this song. I must admit I that oasis photo brought a tear. Reminder of stuff we never got round to doing. You need to seize the moment…..

It was a big hit wasn’t it! I was just starting high school and I remember hearing it all the time, but I never paid attention to the lyrics.
Now…I am wondering about the oasis photo. What were the two of you planning?
How I wish she was with you.

The usual romantic holiday stuff. Stupidly we kept putting the adventures off. That potential moment has gone now so we have to move on. And with perfect timing a song has come on the radio with the Line ‘Heaven seems to far away’….now it’s ‘leaving roses on your grave’. It’s a cheery ditty.

I do know that for myself…I have never sought after romantic adventures. Standing at the bus-stop sharing a bag of chips with Goldfinch was enough to make me feel I was in paradise.
The romance is what goes on inside, not really where you are. Yorkshire may as well have been the most romantic and exotic location in the world to your wife – and that was all because you were there.

Maria Muldaur’s version of this left me in a pool of sweat whenever I’d hear it. This was good, just not the same for me. Good pick, though!

I read a couple of articles about the effect Maria Malduar had on her audience!

Thanks Li! It always seemed like a fun song – I didn’t notice the lyrics as a kiddo.

I’d only heard the original song and didn’t even know this new one had been recorded. Not bad, being it is a bit faster and some added elements to the music. 🙂

It has a slightly different vibe. It think that’s why I never noticed the lyrics. It was just a fun song. When I listened to the one by Maria Malduar, it has a very different feel to it.
