Making Me Nervous

One day last week, I had to go to a part of London that I don’t often pass through. It is south of the river and between London Vauxhall and London Bridge, but quite a way back from the river. I was around Lambeth, Kennington and Elephant and Castle. I used to go down to Elephant and Castle quite a bit because I had a lot of Spanish speaking friends who lived there. But it has been a long time since I was there, and as I was walking, I found I started to become a bit nervous.

kennington

I was not nervous until a young man did something that I thought was a bit strange. I saw him in the distance walking, and I noticed that when he saw me, he turned around and started walking away quickly. As I was approaching the corner of the pavement and needed to cross the road, I realized he was behind me. I couldn’t see him, but I knew he was there. So I swung around and grinned and I said “Hi, how are you?” in a big friendly voice. I think I surprised him, because he gave me one funny look and then walked off in a different direction.

young man.jpgFurther down the road another young man who was riding a bicycle started to circle me. Round and round he went. I was convinced he was going to try to steal my phone or purse. So I pulled out my phone from my pocket. Why did I do that? Because I have a battered up old Nokia phone that does not work properly. I can’t have telephone conversations unless I put the other person on loud speaker and one of the keys on the key-pad does not work. I think producing my phone was a good idea, because not long after, he rode off.

Then another young man standing on the other side of the road, crossed and started walking towards me. Yet again I pulled out my little Nokia. He stopped and turned around and crossed back over the road.

I was trying not to be paranoid, but it was all a bit weird. I was very relieved when I saw several Asian family groups ahead exiting a building and merging onto the pavement I was already on. They all seemed to be carrying Tupperware, and I wondered whether they had been at some kind of social gathering. I was glad to be within the families, and felt safer not that I was not walking along on my own.

IMG_20180722_085452.jpgWhen I am out and about in London I rarely carry anything valuable. I have my keys of course, my battered Nokia phone and my Oyster card so that I can travel on the London transport network. I also carry a one litre water bottle so I don’t have to buy a drink when I am out. If anyone stole any of those things on me, they wouldn’t be profited…but it would be so annoying and would inconvenience me greatly.

Maybe those boys were not up to anything and I was just being overly nervous. But, every time I look at the BBC News website, it makes me feel this world is just descending into a place where it is more likely I am going to be a victim of crime. I have already been the victim of a serious crime, the last thing I want is to be stuck miles away from my little abode without my Oyster card or my bashed up Nokia because of some unconscionable opportunist.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to live in a world that feels safe? A world where there is no crime, no violence, no terrorism and no warfare. I don’t want to be nervous walking down the street in the middle of the afternoon. And bless them, people criticise politicians, blaming crime on police funding cuts.

I read something very interesting last week in a little pamphlet I picked up from a display near St Paul’s cathedral. It was all about the changes we need to enjoy real safety and security. It gave the example of a patient in hospital who was in pain. If the doctors just kept on giving the patient pain killers and did not tackle the cause of the pain, the person could deteriorate (or even die). Police have an important role and I am grateful for their hard work. But more police, more security cameras, more prisons, etc is not going to eliminate the reasons why people do wrong things and turn to crime.

Well for now…I am going to be as shrewd as I can and keep my eyes wide open when I am walking in areas I am not very familiar with….and I do think my battered Nokia is an asset!

    1. In all honesty, I do not know what the law is on knives…but I do know there have been police checks and some people found with knives have had their knives confiscated and I guess they were charged.

There have been a lot of stabbings in London. (I think it is about 30-40 so far in 2019.) Normally when they happen, you presume that it must be some argument, or something to do with drugs or gangs. But there have been very young kids stabbed and a couple of weeks ago, I think it was four of five people who were stabbed completely randomly. It seemed as if the perpetrator was just targeting random people who happened to be alone. I heard they made an arrest, but I don’t know much else. But the mind boggles.

      1. Well, I was thinking along the lines of something for personal defense. Law abiding folks will be targets because they will be unarmed. Criminals will always have something. And it makes sense that London would have harsh laws against such things because of the crime statistics. Large cities are always dangerous places. Keep your head on a swivel out there!

I am not afraid of personal injury. I am not afraid of death. These matters are trivial – for they can easily be undone by the Creator.

However, if they steal my Oyster card and my phone and I have to walk five hours to reach home, I will be rather ticked off – let me tell you!!!

  1. Those are very smart things you did. As a pretty young woman, you attract attention. I worry i may start attracting attention for a different reason ~ being older and looking vulnerable. You often see older women in the news getting hurt as people steal things from them. I never will go to a cash machine after dark for this reason. A woman my age was knocked down and robbed at one late at night in my neighborhood last year. So scary!

    1. I think the type of people who are going to steal are total opportunists. If they see someone on their own, or if they think they can make a quick grab of a nice phone or purse and run. There are a lot of clips shown on the news of young people on mopeds driving onto the pavement and grabbing the phone out of a pedestrian’s hand while they are on the phone to someone.

  2. Oh dear, that sounds creepy. Good thing for the Nokia! And I think that’s such an interesting point about crime prevention. Putting people in jail is intervening far too late in the whole process.

  3. Actually I don’t think you were being paranoid or anything. Predators look for victims, and if someone they’ve targeted shows (in the slightest way) that they aren’t a victim, the creep usually moves along to someone who is easier pickings. And London is a huge honking city, so that number of unsavory fellows isn’t out of the question.

I’m sure you know these simple but effective protection actions: Carry your keys in your fist, with the pointed ends sticking outward. Repeatedly stab anyone who tries to attack you and go for the eyes and soft parts. The phone idea is an EXCELLENT choice. I once was followed (and harassed) by some gang bangers in Salt Lake City. I pulled out my phone and pretended to be dialing the police and that car? Took off at a fast rate. If you are grabbed, pretend to faint, making yourself a dead weight. Usually anybody trying to do something will drop you, because they’re startled and the dead weight is too much to heft around (this obviously wouldn’t apply to body builder types. WEll I guess…?)

One of the biggest reasons I left Salt Lake City is that it is growing into a BIG city. I never ever wanted to live in a big city…and where I lived was full of crime and getting worse. When hubby died I knew it was time to leave, because an older disabled woman is a target for all sorts.

I’m sorry your walk was ruined though! 😦

    1. I have to go back to that area next week and I am don’t think I will be able to help but be on the look out. I am not going to take anything valuable and I am even considering taking my money belt (which I usually only use on holidays) to out my Oyster card in.

  4. Having five granddaughters, they are taught not to walk alone especially on college campuses. This isn’t new. My daughter, now in her forties also had problems on college campus and while driving near home. We lived in TX at that time and she was 1500 miles away at school. I wanted to get a tazer for her because at that time they were legal in TX. We never did, and she was fine, but it’s always worrying when your child is away.

  5. Same here. There are places that one does not walk in. Our small city is located on a main thouroughfair that goes east and west from state of Texas to Florida to California Approx. 3959.53 Km. Can I say ‘cocain alley’? ;*(

  6. This article well written. I know for me that sometimes feel uncomfortable and insecure in public places. But I have found some reassuring information. At Psalms 72:7, in part, says: “Peace will abound.” What do you think about this prophecy?

  7. Also, Psalms 37:9 says: “For evil men will be done away with.” Verse 11 says: “But the meek will posses the earth.” Would it be a wonderful if just meek people were on the earth?

    1. I know those verses well. Those who love what is right will enjoy peace on earth forever. I have no doubt that the earth will be as it should be – a beautiful home to a beautiful human family who are in harmony with their Creator and all of His creation.

Goodnight. Sweet dreams of a universe that is at peace and everything is good 🙂

              1. Hi Mackenzie

I recognised it immediately. It is a wonderful video that I have been shown before. I think I included a link to it in one of my posts – the makers of this video have really nailed it.

                  1. I have seen a stunning video that is about the phenomenon of iridescence. I love physics so I was really very very impressed by it.

There is a woman who I met when I went to a service about Jesus death and resurrection who has been sending me lots of links to all sorts videos, books to download.

I need to catch up with what she has sent me. She is very sweet and I appreciate her taking the time, but she has kind of deluged me.

                    2. She sent me that too. If you don’t mind, I would prefer to carry on the conversations with her, since I have actually met her and her family and we have been in touch for a number of weeks.

You seem very genuine, but I really am very cautious with regards to conversing online with strangers.

I have had some very unpleasant experiences with the internet. I have been writing short stories and poems and that is the only reason I use WordPress. It is pleasant to engage in interaction with fellow writers but it is generally just comments of appreciation for each other’s work.

I would never compromise my security by providing any information about myself to a stranger.

Please don’t be offended by what I say, but it is an absolute no to me. The only way I will use the internet is by sticking within very firm safety perimeters.

But thank you for your positive messages all the same. I wish you well. And when the world has changed and everyone alive is peaceable and right-hearted maybe we will bump into each other.

But for now, I would like to just stick with chatting about the scriptures with the lady I met. She knows her Bible very well and is very logical.
